Brilliant Vikings stun Sliders


Vikings launched their quest for Vaisakhi International hockey women's title in style, stunning pre-match favourites Sliders 1-0 at City Park last weekend.

Kenya Police and Telkom Orange also staged a good start with victories against their rivals.

A breathtaking back flip from zero angle by June Jerop in the 31st minute was the goal that Vikings needed to chalk revenge against Sliders.

Sliders had a month ago beaten Vikings 2-0 in women's League tie.

"We played a good game and things can only get better. We won't lose our focus since our target is only one... the title," said Vikings captain Benazir Omotto.

"We are ready for the final and my charges know what it will take them."

Telkom could have drowned Strathmore University 22-0 previously in a League encounter, but the varsity students exhibited great character and spirit to restrict the champions to a 1-0 victory.

Struck a brace

Mid-fielder Pristine Njeri grabbed the winner for Telkom after latching onto a loose clearance to smack home. Vikings play Strathmore while Telkom are up against Sliders on Friday.

Police were callous against National League outfits, Kenya Polytechnic, crushing them 9-0 before drowning Kenya College of Accountancy University 5-1.

International Willis Okeyo and James Munyi notched a brace each to propel Police over Polytechnic students in Pool A clash.

Other scorers were Ken Osikuku, Sam Oungo and Oliver Echenje. Okeyo, Munyi, Osikuku and Echenje would again score against KCAU as Joab Ondiro completed the assault.

Kevin Oduor managed the consolation for KCAU. Polytechnic were to later force Multi Media University to a 3-3 draw.

Frank Wanangwe drilled home a brace as Premier League champions Strathmore reigned in Pool B, beating Parklands 4-0. Allan Iningu and Teddy Ashibende notched the other goals.

In the other Pool B duel, Inderjit Matharu notched on the stroke of half time as Nairobi Simba roared 2-1 past a battling Parklands. Pritam Virdi gave Simba the lead in the second minute only for Ben Mita to equalise in the 14th minute.

Ghanaian teams, Excheques and Customs, will join the battle in the second round starting Saturday after the pool winners have been determined.

Excheques engage winners of Pool A and runners-up Pool B with the winner sailing through to the final where they will encounter the winner of the second phase.
