Coffee farmers will have to wait until next year to benefit from debt waiver in a government plan.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Budget Committee Elias Mbau said the earliest the debts can be waived is March next year.
The Maragwa MP said the Sh4.4 billion that the Government has committed towards the waiver will only be released after the debate on the supplementary budget.
"The earliest this will happen can only be in March after we have resumed from the Christmas recess. This is because the funds can only be released upon the debate and passing of the supplementary budget," he said. Mr Mbau said the waiver would benefit farmers who were considered in the 2006 waiver of Sh5.6 billion, that was extended by the Narc government. Speaking at Munguini ACK Church in his Maragua constituency at the weekend, he said coffee growers from Murang'a County will get the lions share of the waiver.
"Farmers from this area will get Sh1.2 billion of the amount," said the MP.
