State moves in to shore up Coast's tourism potential

The Ministry of Tourism will appoint a consultant to help in the rebranding of Destination Kenyan Coast.

"The Tourist Trust Fund (TTF) and Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) will take the lead role in ensuring that the rebranding process becomes a reality," Tourism Minister Najib Balala, who was flanked by his Assistant Minister, Cecily Mbarire, and PS Leah Gwiyo, said.

"Together with the National Economic Social Council (NESC), my ministry and the sector round table meeting will help prop up Destination Coast," Balala said at an inaugural stakeholders round table meeting.

Veteran hotelier, Mahmud Jan Mohamed, and CEO of the TPS Serena Group, will oversee the establishment of the Tourism Business Council.

The high level tourism round table meeting will be convened twice a year, and will run under the tutelage of National Economic Council secretary, Julius Muya and Vision 2030 CEO Mugo Kibati.

Balala reiterated that improvements and investments in major infrastructural projects, which will spur growth and ease communication, should be given priority.

"These include the establishment of Dongo Kundu by-pass to connect Mombasa and the greater South Coast, and possibly having a bridge over the Likoni ferry crossing channel," the Minister said.

The Minister also announced that the long overdue classification of hotels, lodges and restaurants would finally be held in December. He urged hoteliers to support the venture, which seeks to ensure establishments conform with international set bench marks.

The Ministry is also liasing with the Ministry of transport to boost air traffic flow from key source markets into Mombasa. Balala said that he will be meeting with the Transport Minister get more airlines to start flying into Mombasa.
