Nation Classic back at Nyali


The sponsored golf tournament dubbed this year as the "Nation Media Group 50th Anniversary Golf Classic" returns to the Coast region and Nyali in particular this weekend, for the first time after three years.

The last time the classic was held at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course was in 2007 while in 2008 it crossed the Likoni ferry to the scenic Leisure Lodge Resort in Diani.

Though Nyali had been scheduled to host the 2009 edition but due to circumstances beyond the NMG's control only four events were held last year while the remaining events including the Coast regional qualifier were cancelled.

An impressive field of 165 players including a strong contingent of 43 guests and staff of the Nation Media group was drawn for this weekend's 18-hole stableford event.

This is the largest field this year in the Classic which has so far visited Nyanza, Machakos, Muthaiga, Nanyuki, Arusha and Thika. It is open to golfers in the Coast based clubs of Nyali, Mombasa, Leisure Lodge, Malindi and newly constructed Vipingo Ridge.

Besides an array of prizes being offered and lots of entertain, members of those clubs will have a chance of qualifying for the grand finale at Muthaiga Golf Club on November 5 where the overall winner will earn an all expenses paid for trip to Dubai to watch the 2011 Dubai Desert Classic.

Shillling for Shilling

This year, the Nation Media Group is matching a shilling for a shilling paid for the players as entry fee, to be donated to the Golf Talent Foundation at the end of the series.

Meanwhile the newly launched Dasani Golf Gala tees off this weekend at Njoro Country Club, the same venue which started off the Tusker Malt Carnival last year.

Over 100 players from the Central Rift region are draw in the team format series where the four winners will win a fully paid for golf trip to South Africa for the Gary Player Invitational hosted by Coca Cola at the Fancourt in George.

On the other hand, the Zain Blackberry Golf Challenge resumes also this weekend at Kenya Railway Golf Club after over a month break and an impressive field of 130 players were drawn for the fourth leg. They will vie for a number of prizes mainly BlackBerry and Nokia mobile phones.
