A colleague told me last week this was "An African World Cup" and I proudly told him yes. But he went ahead to write that he meant "Un African World Cup."
But after watching Ghana struggle to hold ten-man Australia and Cameroon become the first team to be eliminated from the competition, then I believe it is truly "Un African World Cup."
When Colombian singer Shakira sang this was "Time for Africa" we did not care to ask what she really meant.
To many, we think she meant it was time for Africa to win the Fifa World Cup or it was time for Africa to host the global football extravaganza.
But I believe she meant it was time for Africa to be beaten in front of their own fans and see the World Cup being lifted by a team from outside the continent.
Otherwise how will one explain the performance of the African teams at this tournament so far?
Ghana remains the only team to have won at this event but if their show against Australia is anything to go by, then they could as well join Cameroon on their next flight back home.
To play for a draw against 10 men was unforgivable and the Black Stars might even fail to get the point they need to qualify against Germany in the last group match.
For Cameroon, there is nothing to say as they wanted to walk the ball into the net against Denmark and they got what they deserved. Nigeria, on the other hand, planned their own funeral and we do not expect them to beat South Korea, the same applies to hosts South Africa.
Ivory Coast faced Brazil last night and there was little hope of them beating the five-time champions and the best is a draw. We should not expect much as this is truly "Un African World Cup."
